Men from several local parishes, in collaboration with the Philadelphia chapter of the Regnum Christi movement, established the Fatherhood & Leadership Initiative in 2008 in response to their own personal need for virtues based tools that would help them become better fathers and leaders of their families.
In its initial year, FLI touched almost 1000 people with its message of virtue based family leadership. FLI hosted nationally renowned speakers like Curtis Martin, a syndicated TV talkshow host and author of Boys to Men: The Transforming Power of Virtue, who used humor, stories, and his own life experiences as a father of 8 children to communicate the critical role of virtue in the life of fathers. FLI also hosted 4 Quarterly Breakfast meetings, featuring prominent local men like Don Saleski of the 74-75 Stanley Cup Philadelphia Flyers, where men could hear and reflect on real life examples of men incorporating virtues into their family and professional lives. FLI also hosted its inaugural Father Daughter dance, featuring Brenda Sharman, a model, actress and former Miss Georgia who was so disappointed by the lack of virtue in her chosen career, that she started her own organization called Pure Fashion to promote modesty and chastity among young women.
